Tony Almeida has ruined 24
by Oscar on May.01, 2009, under TV Reviews
I’ve been a fan of Jack Bauer and “24″ for a few years now, so much so that I rented the first few seasons on DVD and watched them in a marathon session that lasted a week. I would even plan my social engagements to dove tail with my TV viewing so that I wouldn’t have to miss an episode.
No one was more politically incorrect than Jack Bauer, often acting alone and outside the Counter Terrorism Unit team’s efforts, no one was more apt to resort to torture and violence to achieve a desirable end. And all of this contrary to the powers that be! Jack was my hero!
But something happened this season that has changed my attitude. Two seasons ago agent Tony Almeida, Jack Bauer’s friend and co worker, was killed in an auto mobile explosion. At least that was the way it seemed, but this season he turns up as an agent for a shadowy group trying to subvert the U.S. government’s attempts to free an African nation from a tyrannical military leader. It turns out that the car explosion was a ploy to kidnap Almeida and turn him from the straight path onto one of anger, recrimination and revenge.
OK, all well and good. But as the season progressed, and Jack catches up with him, Tony then confides that he is really under deep cover for the good guys and takes Jack into his confidence.Ooookaaaay!
But a couple of weeks ago we see Tony killing an FBI agent and then trying to kill Jack. So, what’s up with the writers of this show? Are they just jerking us around? Have they lost focus and are just flying by the seat of their pants? C’mon now!
I am just about done with “24″. The plots have been increasingly slapdash, sort of like the stories a little kid tells when he gets caught doing something wrong, each successive telling gets longer and more involved until he finally gives it up. “24″ has gotten to be just like that little kid!
So goodbye Jack, I really don’t care if you die from the nerve gas. I also find it curious that if this nerve gas is supposed to be so lethal why then is Jack still alive? Were the bad guys so inept that their biggest weapon turns out to be so inefficient?
This time the writers have stretched my credulity to its limit. I can no longer enjoy a story that careens from one plot to another, subplots hidden inside subplots, each more unbelievable that the previous ones. In fact, I no longer care about the whole program. I’m not a happy viewer.
