BRUNO: A Steaming Pile Of Crap!

Only Rated “R”? No WAY!
Like over 30 million other suckers I allowed myself to be influenced by the community of Film Critics who proclaimed Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” to be a triumph of comedy film making. And even the website Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 69% (how ironic!) “Fresh” rating. After seeing it myself I have to ask “WHY?”
Be aware, this is NOT so much a review as it is a hit piece on Cohen. After THIS stinker I would think that Cohen would be radioactive to any film company, producer or investor who might be approached with a film idea from this guy, but I’m probably wrong on that. And if you think that I’m just an old fart who doesn’t understand today’s humor, let me tell you WHY I think the way I do:
Early on in the film we get to see Bruno and his “pygmy” lover engage in some very bizarre gay sexual acts, including champagne bottles in anuses, and high velocity penetration involving dildoes and a bungee cord powered office chair.
An extended pantomime by Cohen simulating fellatio and anal penetration.
An exhibition of how flexible a flaccid and very large penis can be when swung back and forth. And you know those talking babies and puppies you see on TV? Well, think “talking penis”
A scene involving a totally naked dominatrix trying to control an underwear clad Cohen with a leather belt.
Oh, there’s more, MUCH more, and ALL of it totally devoid of humor. The only reason this can be considered a “comedy” is by watching the reactions of the people Cohen shocks and offends in the film. There is very little that Cohen himself does that is funny in itself. When Cohen has Bruno interview celebrities as a way to become famous, all the attempts at humor come at the interviewee’s expense, all but one, that is. In one of the best bits in the film Bruno tries to ambush Harrison Ford into an interview, but Ford shows good sense as he replies “F___k off!” as he blows right by him. Now THAT was funny!
I can say that I wasn’t at all surprised to see the theater empty out before the credits were done rolling, and I can also see why the bulk of the 30 million attended a Friday night showing while each succeeding day attracted smaller and smaller crowds. People talked, and not much of it was good.
Following is a review of the film that I found on the website “Entertainment Weekly”. One one side is a man who is singing Bruno’s praises, while on the other is a woman who is saying that the whole thing is just too full of sex stuff. It is fairly interesting if you consider the sexual preferences of the two, and I’m probably right on when I say that the guy is, more than likely, gay. How can I say that? You decide for yourself. Oh yeah, I almost forgot! My rating for the despicable “Bruno”?
What a pile!
